Mooncake is a better fit if you want:
(1) to manage just one system for OLTP and OLAP (no ETL/CDC etc)
(2) a Postgres-native system for OLAP: Logs, Timeseries, and Warehousing.
(3) run 'up-to-date' analytics on updating/changing OLTP tables.
(4) keep data in open table formats and prevent vendor lock-in.

Mooncake is a better fit if you want:
(1) significantly faster analytic queries
(2) you are using Timescale Apache 2.0, and want columnar compression.
(3) you don't need all the native timeseries functions.

There's two parts to this:
(1) Fast Queries: Mooncake is actually faster than DuckDB + Parquet. The answer: segment elimination
(2) Fast Ingest: You can run fast inserts, updates, deletes directly on columnstore tables. We buffer writes in an in-memory columnstore, before periodically flushing to Iceberg. This is Project Moonlink internally (will be open-sourced soon).

Fast analytics need columnar storage and a vectorized engine (DuckDB).
pg_duckdb adds the vectorized engine, and is great for querying external datasets (CSV, Parquet) in Postgres.
Mooncake adds native columnstore tables to Postgres which you can transactionally insert/update/delete into. Queries on Mooncake columnstore are executed by DuckDB.

project Moonlink extends Iceberg to ingest 'real-time streams' like CDC from Postgres.
Moonlink is an in-memory columnstore which buffers writes; and only periodic creates Iceberg snapshots. Mooncake Columnstore is a union of Moonlink + Iceberg snapshot.
Moonlink will be soon released with an open source license.
